Leona Alleslev is a federal politician, corporate leader, entrepreneur and former military officer.
Leona was first elected in 2015 and served for 6 years as the Member of Parliament for Aurora Oak Ridges Richmond Hill.
Leona was appointed Deputy Leader of her Majesty's Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, Shadow Cabinet Minister for Global Security and Shadow Cabinet Minister for Foreign Affairs. She acted as Vice Chair of the Foreign Affairs and International Development Committee and a member of the Economic Relationship with the US, Canada-China Relations, National Defence, COVID 19 Pandemic, Citizenship and Immigration and Government Operations House of Commons committees.
Leona was appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister to serve as a member of Canada's National Security & Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians.
Leona served as Chair of Canada's NATO Parliamentary Association responsible for leading Canada’s Parliamentary delegation to NATO, hosting the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) 2018 Annual Session in Canada and acting as a rapporteur on the NATO PA Science & Technology Committee writing four reports entitled “Maintaining NATO’s Technological Edge and Enhancing Agility” in 2018, “Anti-Submarine Warfare” in 2019, “Defence Innovation” in 2020 and “Biological Threats, Technological Progress and Bio-terrorism in a Post COVID-19 Era” in 2021.
After being elected in 2015, Leona was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Services and Procurement responsible for supporting the Minister primarily in the areas of Defence Procurement for the Joint Support Ship (JSS), Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) and Future Fighter Capability (FFC) Programs, consolidated Government of Canada IT services at Shared Services Canada, Phoenix Pay System, and renewal of Canada Post to support new technologies and improved service to Canadians.
Prior to serving as a Member of Parliament, Leona held senior leadership roles at Bombardier Aerospace in aircraft manufacturing, at IBM in financial management and logistics operations systems implementations and in the Department of National Defence. She served on the Aerospace Industry Association of Canada, the Ontario Aerospace Council and the Women in Aerospace Association joint government/industry change initiatives.
Leona has also owned and operated two small businesses; an eco-tourism canoe outfitting business, Temagami Outfitting Inc providing adventure excursions in the Temagami Wilderness region, and a custom closet and home organization company, Essential Space in Aurora.
Leona earned a B.A. (Honours) in History and Political Science from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston and received her Queen’s Commission to serve as an Air Force Logistic Officer.
As a former Air Force Officer, Leona is a strong supporter of our men and women in uniform. She also champions women in senior leadership, and strongly encourages youth to get involved with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Leona has lived or worked in all regions of Canada but now calls Oak Ridges her home, where she has lived for the past 17 years with her husband Ted, and their two children Christopher and Hillary.
Leona is committed to putting the needs of her constituents and her country first. As a Member of Parliament, her top priorities included working to achieve structural changes to strengthen Canada’s economy, supporting the development of a comprehensive foreign and national security policy and increasing government transparency and performance metrics to effectively deliver federal government services for Canadians.
